Automation Rules — Automate Stock Actions & Alerts

Access to Inventory → Rules

Inventory tracking is enabled for products

Overview

Inventory Automation Rules let you automatically take action when stock levels change.

Instead of manually monitoring inventory, you can define rules that trigger actions when stock levels are low, out of stock, or overstocked. These rules help prevent overselling, reduce operational errors, and keep your Shopify storefront accurate at all times.

Each rule runs continuously in the background and applies across products and locations, as configured.

💡 Why Inventory Automation Matters

Manual inventory checks don’t scale.

Without automation, teams often face:

  • Products sell when stock is unavailable
  • Overstocked items remaining active
  • Delayed reactions to inventory changes
  • Missed alerts and operational gaps

Inventory Automation Rules ensure your catalog responds instantly to stock conditions—without manual intervention.

3️⃣ Enter Basic Information

Fill in the following:

  • Rule Name – A descriptive name for the rule
  • Active – Enable or disable the rule

Expected: Only active rules will be applied.

4️⃣ Configure Rule Conditions

Under Rule Configuration, select:

Condition

Choose when the rule should trigger:

  • Low Stock
  • Out of Stock
  • Overstock

Threshold Type

Choose how the threshold is calculated:

  • Quantity – Based on inventory count
  • Days of Supply – Based on estimated sell-through

Threshold Value

Set the value that triggers the rule (example: 0 units).

5️⃣ Choose an Action

Select what should happen when the condition is met:

  • Hide Product – Removes product visibility from storefront
  • Stop Selling – Prevents checkout while keeping product visible
  • Auto Inventory Update – Adjusts inventory automatically

Expected: The selected action will be applied immediately when the rule is triggered.

6️⃣ Configure Notifications

Choose how you want to be notified when the rule runs.

Available option:

  • Email notification

Expected: You receive alerts when inventory reaches the defined threshold.

7️⃣ Save the Rule

Click Save.

Expected:

  • Rule appears in the Inventory Rules list
  • Rule begins monitoring inventory immediately if active

✅ Validate

After creating a rule, confirm:

  • Rule status is Active
  • Condition and threshold values are correct
  • Action matches the intended behavior
  • Notification channel is enabled

Test by adjusting inventory to ensure the rule triggers correctly.
