⚙️ How Pricing & Discounts Work
Feature | Description | Example | Shopify Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
Base Price | Standard selling price for a product | $100 | Main price shown to customers |
Compare at Price | Displays discount by showing old price | $120 → $100 | Shows crossed-out price |
Sale Dates | Schedule automatic sale periods | Oct 1–10 | Auto-activates price change |
Multi-Currency | Price conversions per region | USD, EUR, GBP | Region-specific pricing |
Tiered Pricing | Set different prices per group | Wholesale = $90 | Custom group pricing |
Expected: All configured prices sync with Shopify automatically within minutes after saving.
Steps
1️⃣ Set Base Price
Open a product and go to the Pricing section.
Enter the Price (standard selling price).
Expected: Price displays as the main selling price on the product page.
2️⃣ Add Compare at Price
To show discounts, enter a Compare at Price (original price before discount).
💡 Tip: Shopify displays this as a crossed-out price next to the discounted one.
Expected: Both prices appear side-by-side on the storefront.
3️⃣ Set Sale Dates (Optional)
If a discount is time-limited, set Start Date and End Date in the Pricing section.
Expected: Sale price automatically activates and deactivates on the defined dates.
4️⃣ Configure Multi-Currency Pricing
Go to Settings → Markets and enable Multi-Currency Pricing.
You can:
- Set prices manually per currency, or
- Enable Automatic Conversion using live exchange rates.
💡 Tip: Use manual prices for stable margins instead of relying on automatic conversion.
Expected: Regional storefronts display correct prices synced with Shopify Markets.
5️⃣ Set Tiered Pricing
For wholesale or VIP customers, go to Settings → Customer Groups.
Create or select a group (e.g., Retail, Wholesale, VIP).
Assign specific price lists or discount rates per group.
Expected: Group-specific pricing applies automatically when eligible customers log in or order.
6️⃣ Bulk Update Prices
Go to Catalog → Bulk Edit.
Filter or select products, then choose Update Pricing from the bulk actions menu.
Apply a fixed price, percentage increase, or discount across selected products.
Expected: All updates apply simultaneously and sync to Shopify.
7️⃣ Review Pricing Reports
Go to Reports → Pricing to view:
- Price changes over time
- Active discounts and promotions
- Average pricing per category or customer group
Expected: Reports show trends and campaign performance.
✅ Validate
After configuration, verify the following:
✅ Base and Compare at Prices display correctly on product pages
✅ Scheduled discounts activate/deactivate automatically
✅ Tiered pricing applies for correct customer groups
✅ Multi-currency prices display accurately across regions
✅ All price updates sync with Shopify within minutes
🔧 Troubleshooting
Issue | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Prices not updating in Shopify | Sync delay or integration paused | Check Shopify integration settings |
Sale not activating | Incorrect date range | Adjust sale schedule and re-save |
Wrong currency showing | Auto-conversion enabled | Switch to manual pricing per market |
Tiered pricing not applied | Customer not in assigned group | Verify group membership in Settings → Customer Groups |
