Overview
Tags are flexible labels you can assign to products to organize, group, and filter them.
Unlike categories, tags are non-hierarchical and can represent campaigns, seasons, product traits, or any custom classification.
Tags sync automatically with Shopify and can be used for automated collections, filtering, and workflow automation.
💡 Why Tags Matter
Tags provide a flexible, multi-dimensional way to classify products without the constraints of hierarchical categories.
Effective tagging improves:
- 🔍 Product discoverability through filtering and search
- 🛍️ Campaign and seasonal merchandising agility
- ⚙️ Automated collection creation based on dynamic criteria
- 🤝 Cross-functional workflows in Shopify Flow
- 📊 Data analysis and reporting by product attributes
Tags sync instantly with Shopify, enabling real-time updates across your storefront and backend systems.
⚙️ How Tags Work
Function | Description | Example | Shopify Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
Tag Creation | Add new tags for labeling products | “Summer”, “Bestseller”, “Clearance” | Auto-sync to Shopify |
Tag Assignment | Add tags to one or more products | Apply “Eco-Friendly” to selected SKUs | Enables collection automation |
Bulk Tagging | Add or remove tags in bulk | “Sale” across 100+ items | Faster merchandising updates |
Filtering | Search or view products by tag | Filter → Tag = “New Arrivals” | Speeds up product management |
Expected: Tags applied in MerchPIM sync automatically with Shopify tags for consistent product grouping.
Steps
1️⃣ Go to Tags Management
Navigate to Catalog → Tags.
This page lists all tags currently in use, along with the number of products tagged with each.
2️⃣ Create a New Tag
Click + Add Tag.
Enter a Tag Name (e.g., Summer, Sale, Eco-Friendly).
Optionally, add a description or color code for easier visual identification.
3️⃣ Tag Products
Open a product and navigate to the Tags section.
Start typing to search existing tags or create a new one by typing and pressing Enter.
Multiple tags can be added to a single product.
4️⃣ Bulk Tag Products
To tag many products at once:
- Go to Catalog → Bulk Edit.
- Filter or select products to tag.
- Choose Add Tags from the Bulk Actions menu.
- Enter the tag name and apply.
5️⃣ Use Tags for Filtering
On the product list page, use the Tags filter to view all products with a specific tag.
Useful for reviewing seasonal, promotional, or flagged items.
6️⃣ Sync with Shopify
If connected to Shopify, tags sync automatically.
You can use tags to:
- Create automated collections
- Apply Shopify Flow triggers
- Segment reports by tag-based criteria
✅ Validate
After tagging:
- Confirm tags appear in the Tags list with the correct product count.
- Open a tagged product and ensure tags are visible.
- Use the filter to display products by tag.
- If Shopify is connected, verify tags appear correctly in the Shopify Admin.
🔧 Troubleshooting
Issue | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Tag not appearing on product | Tag not saved or sync delay | Refresh page, ensure tag saved, wait 2 min for sync |
Unable to create new tag | Tag name exists or invalid | Check existing tags, avoid special characters |
Bulk tagging failed | Insufficient permissions or locked products | Ensure Edit access and unlocked products |
Tags not syncing to Shopify | Integration disconnected | Reconnect Shopify under Settings → Integrations |
🌟 Best Practices
- Maintain consistent naming conventions (e.g., Title Case or lowercase).
- Avoid redundant or overly specific tags.
