Overview
The Media Library stores all images and digital assets used across your catalog.
From here, you can upload, organize, and manage files that support product listings, attributes, and other catalog content.
Each uploaded file can be tagged, categorized, and linked to specific products to maintain consistency and save time when updating visuals.
💡 Why Media Management Matters
A well-organized Media Library keeps your product data accurate, consistent, and visually appealing across Shopify and internal workflows.
Proper tagging and association improve:
- SEO and structured data quality
- Product page clarity and trust signals
- Workflow speed during catalog updates
- Reusability of approved brand assets
- Cross-team collaboration on visual content
Every file you upload in MerchPIM can sync or be linked to Shopify products, ensuring that all images and assets stay centralized and version-controlled.
⚙️ How Media Fields Work
Field | Example Value | Shopify Impact |
|---|---|---|
File Name | office-chair-main.jpg | Product image & search result thumbnail |
Tags | CHAIR-ERG-01, Lifestyle, 2025 | Easier asset lookup & reuse |
Folder | Office Furniture | Organized by category |
Associated Product | Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair | PDP gallery image |
File Type | JPG (1920×1080) | SEO-optimized media size |
Steps
1️⃣ Open the Media Library
Go to Catalog → Media Library.
Expected: Page displays all uploaded media files in a grid view showing thumbnails, names, and tags.
2️⃣ Upload Files
Click Upload Files or drag and drop files directly into the upload area.
Supported formats: JPG, PNG, WEBP (max 10 MB each; upload multiple at once).
💡 Tip: Use consistent naming conventions (e.g., SKU-type-angle.jpg) for easy tracking.
Expected: Files appear instantly in the grid with thumbnails generated.
3️⃣ Add Tags and Metadata
After upload, assign tags and metadata to improve searchability.
Tags may include:
- Product SKU or name
- Product category or collection
- Image type (e.g., lifestyle, packaging, label)
Expected: Tagged images display searchable keywords in the sidebar.
4️⃣ Organize into Folders
Click New Folder to create folders by product line or category.
Drag and drop files into folders for cleaner structure.
💡 Tip: Keep folders aligned with catalog categories for consistent naming.
Expected: Folder tree updates instantly with file counts shown per folder.
5️⃣ Associate Files with Products
Click an image → Associate with Product → select desired products.
Use Preview to verify orientation, image quality, and resolution before linking.
Expected: Associated product IDs appear under the file name; image now visible on the corresponding product page.
6️⃣ Search and Filter
Use the Search bar or filters to find media by name, tag, or associated product.
Expected: Search results display only matching media items.
✅ Validate
After setup, confirm that all uploaded files appear with correct thumbnail, name, and tags.
Verify that search and filters return accurate results.
Check that linked images appear in product galleries correctly and that image resolution meets Shopify standards (≥ 1000 px on the longest side).
🔧 Troubleshooting
Issue | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
File not uploading | Format not supported / too large | Use JPG, PNG, or WEBP ≤ 10 MB |
Missing thumbnails | Browser cache / slow sync | Refresh or clear cache |
Tag search not working | Tags not saved | Re-enter tags and click Save |
Product association missing | Product not selected | Re-link via “Associate with Product” |
