Overview
Product Versioning lets you track every saved change made to a product over time.
From the Product Manager list, you can open a product’s version log directly from the Total versions column. Inside the version log, you can review what changed, see the current live state, and restore any previous version when needed.
This helps teams prevent catalog mistakes, maintain accountability, and recover quickly without manual rework.
💡 Why Product Versioning Matters
Without version history, catalog updates can create problems that are hard to trace:
- A teammate updates tags or descriptions, and no one knows what changed
- A bulk update causes unexpected edits
- You need to revert to a previous product state quickly
- You want an audit trail for product edits across teams
Product Versioning solves this by keeping product edits traceable and reversible.
⚙️ How Version Logs Work
Field | Example Value | Meaning |
Total versions | 5 | Total saved versions for the product |
Version label | v5 | The version number (latest is highest) |
Timestamp | Jan 12th 2026, 06:26:49 | When the version was created |
Changes summary | Tags changed, Description changed | High-level summary of edits |
Current product | Live | The current active/live product state |

Steps
1️⃣ Open Product Manager
Go to Product Manager.
Expected: You see the product list with columns like Products, Status, Inventory, Media, and Total versions.
2️⃣ Locate Total Versions
Find the product you want to review.
In the Total versions column, you will see a number (example: 5) for products that have version history.
Expected: The version count is visible for each product row.
3️⃣ Open the Product Version Log
Click the version count under Total versions for that product.
Expected: The product version log opens and displays a list of versions (v1, v2, v3…).
4️⃣ Review the Current Version
In the version log, select the latest version (top-most version).
Expected:
- The selected version is highlighted
- The Changes Summary panel shows what changed
- The page indicates the Current product state (Live)
5️⃣ Restore an Older Version (if needed)
Select any older version (example: v3 or v2).
Use the Restore action to roll back to that version.
Expected:
- The product is restored to the selected version
- The restored version becomes the active state
- Your product reflects the rolled-back content and fields
✅ Validate
After viewing or restoring versions, confirm:
- The correct version is selected and visible
- The Changes Summary reflects expected edits
- The product fields (title, description, tags, image, variants, etc.) match the version you selected
- If restored, the product now matches the older version you intended to apply
🧩 Troubleshooting
Issue | Likely Cause | Fix |
Total versions shows 1 only | Product hasn’t had meaningful saved changes yet | Make a change → Save → check again |
Clicking the count doesn’t open version log | Permission or page load issue | Refresh and confirm you have Product Manager access |
Can’t find older versions | Version list not scrolled / filtered | Scroll version list and re-check |
Restored version doesn’t look right | Wrong version selected | Compare versions and restore the correct one |
🌟 Best Practices
- Use Total versions as a quick signal for products that have frequent edits
- Review Changes Summary before restoring to avoid applying the wrong version
- Restore immediately when you notice incorrect edits (price, SEO, tags, description, etc.)
- Keep editing inside MerchPIM to maintain consistent version logs and traceability
📈 Impact
🛡 Faster recovery from catalog mistakes
👥 Clear accountability on edits (what changed and when)
⚡ Reduced manual rework during launches and campaigns
✅ Cleaner, safer catalog operations at scale
🧾 Summary
Product Versioning gives you a reliable version log for every product. From Product Manager, click the Total versions count to open a product’s version history, review changes, and restore any older version when needed.
